The doctor of the future will give no medication but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause and prevention of disease”.

Thomas Edison 1903

Thomas Edison’s quote from over a century ago forms the basis of Spinal Joint’s philosophy on chiropractic and wellbeing. Medicines obviously have a role to play in serious illness, but wellbeing is determined by overall lifestyle, not by the latest pill created by the pharmaceutical industry.

Many people who see Richard Lanigan DC MSc (bio) for the first time, have gone down the medical route first. In 2023 you are lucky to even get an examination from a GP, they see you on Zoom, prescribe painkillers and rest. Patients don’t understand why they are continuing to experience pain and are unable to perform normal daily activities. and realise increasing the dose is not the answer. The problem is twofold: painkillers mask the underlying cause of a problem (they can even increase the likelihood of chronicity and osteoarthritis in later life), while sitting for long periods alters spinal posture and reduces joint range of movement, causing more stiffness and pain. If you had a stone in your shoe causing pain, would you take pills to make pain go away?

Movement is the key to a good recovery, and this is where Richard will help.

What we do

Richard opened the practice in 1993, it evolved into a multi disciplines practice now semi retired, Richard is the sole practitioner. He employs a range of techniques to improve spine and pelvic joint dysfunction so that you can return to your normal day-to-day activities, restore balance to your body, get a good nights sleep and enhance immune function. The effects of chiropractic care can be immediate or may take a little longer – it all depends on factors like your age, diet, lifestyle and how healthy your spine is in the first place. In any case, chiropractic adjustments are just the start. We’ll also recommend a structured rehabilitation program to strengthen your core muscles and improve posture. This is essential to maintain the benefits of any intervention.

Richard received his Masters in Health Promotion from Brunell University in 2004 and stopped using the title “Chiropractor” in 2008, for a variety of reasons, which are outlined in his bio.

The goal at Spinal Joint is to keep your musculoskeletal system in tip-top condition so your nerves, muscles, ligaments, joints, bones and internal organs function at optimum level. A healthy spine and nervous system is as important for wellness as good nutrition, exercise and sleep. It can make the difference between a life of health, strength and vitality or one of disease, weakness and disability.

What you can expect

On your first visit Richard will carry out a full assessment including your medical history and a physical examination to see what is causing the problem, this normally costs £70. Most of my patients come by word of mouth, if you want immediate treatment, it is best to speak to Richard 07957560545, to see if he thinks you will benefit from chiropractic care. Alternatively you can book a free 15 minute consultation online.

My treatment plan is in three stages :

1) The Acute Stage lasts up to three weeks until symptoms disappear or stabilise. Chiropractic care starts with spinal adjustments, where spinal joint dysfunction/Vertebral Subluxations are found. About 90% of clients are symptom free or much improved after 10 to 14 days and able to return to normal activity. These visits cost £45

2) The Rehabilitative Stage Exercise to strengthen and stabilise weakened joints. People often believe they have recovered when their symptoms disappear and decide not to continue chiropractic care. But to prevent reoccurrence we always recommend improving the core strength and flexibility of the spine. This takes time, just as it takes time to lose weight, get fit or fix misaligned teeth. These visits cost £30 and can be booked below.

3) The Maintenance Stage We brush our teeth, watch our blood pressure, and get the car serviced. Unfortunately, most people neglect their physical wellbeing, they don’t exercise, consume too many calories and are predisposed to developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease or even cancer in middle age. In the biomedical model you need to have symptoms first, before you would go to your doctor. A bit like waiting for your car to break down on the motorway before having it serviced. A healthy body is able to adapt to physical, chemical (toxins) and emotional stressors, so it makes sense to have it in good working order and to maintain it with chiropractic careThese visits cost £30 and can be booked below. Clients who wish to have maintenance adjustments monthly, can purchase 12 visits for £299 and I am so confident that this approach will keep you pain free and extra visits required are free.

Richard does not do contracts or “carrot and switch” sales schemes. he offers a top-quality, value-for-money service to suit different people, with different needs, one size does not fit all.
